We like to do what we can to be more environmentally friendly.  So we thought you'd enjoy these ideas for “going green” around your home this year.

Install a programmable thermostat – you can set it lower at night and during the day when you’re away (each degree below 20C can save you up to 3-5% on heating costs).

Clean your furnace filter to optimize its performance.

Have your fireplace cleaned and checked to ensure it’s working properly and efficiently by a licensed professional.

Use curtains in the daytime during summer (closing them will keep your home as cool as possible).

Install ceiling fans, as the energy it takes to run a fan is less than an air conditioner. In summer, make sure the fan’s blades are rotating counter-clockwise for a cooling effect. In winter, the fan should be running clockwise, pushing the warm air down.

Use a filter for drinking water, as bottled water adds a huge amount of plastic to our landfills. While out of the house, bring along a re-usable bottle of water

Fix leaking taps - one drop per second could amount to about 7,000 litres of water wasted per year.
